Ideas in my work are often expressed through process. Areas of controlled technique alternate with expressive drawing and painting, encouraging the viewer to consider the interplay of powerful emotion and studied concentration in each work.
Expression is incredibly personal. I believe expressive mark making is a wonderful way for women to voice ourselves. To me, it is the physical form of “the personal is political”. Artists like Dana Schutz and Joan Snyder have influenced me greatly. Content and emotion emanate from the way they paint.
Two constant themes in my work are power struggles and a sense of play. My hope is that the personal nature of my artwork will resonate with the viewers’ processes of introspection, and I invite them to join me in celebrating the joy and freedom of painting.
